I will not be assigning new Scarlet Letter homework. The guide I gave for the first discussion will suffice. However, I mentioned a creative project I have previously assigned with this book and the students seemed interested. This is optional. Here are the details:

The Shunned Person Project

Hester Prynne is shunned by her Puritan community. Choose a person in today's society or in history who has been "shunned" by their community, nation, culture. Research this person and their situation.

Choose a color and a letter (like Hester's Scarlet A) that represents the person's actions that are being frowned upon.

1. Create an elaborate picture of the etter. Be creative. Use your artistic skills, computer graphic skills, etc. It doesn't have to be huge, just big enough for all of us to see. Make the art fit the person and the situation.

2. Write a paragraph about your person (no more). Please include the following information:
- what is shunning and why are people shunned?
- who is your person - described what they have done to be shunned.
- describe how the shunning affected them.
- compare this person with Hester Prynne?
- what is your opinion of public shunning?

3. Present your artwork and person in class.
