Congrats to all the writing students for a good job on their first literary analysis. I was overall very impressed and enjoyed all the insights on Blake's poetry. It's a pleasure to see good minds at work!
After examining the literary analysis paragraphs (the assignment was to do 1-2 thorough paragraphs), I decided to post a couple examples of the homework so students can get extra exposure to what certain elements of literary analysis should look like.
Attached are two mini-essays (note, we did not focus on intros or conclusions yet, but those elements are still present).
Students, please print these two essays. For each essay, do the following and bring to class next co-op:
This should not take more than 1/2 hour; could take less. (For first and second year students, please discuss examples with a parent to be sure your essay has done the same as the ones attached.)
1) Underline the thesis. Is it an opinion or just a summary of the content of the poems?
2) Circle each specific quote or example from the poems themselves that support the opinion.
3) If there is a restatement of the thesis/opinion at the end, underline it.
4) Does the essay analyze the poems, discussing diction, images, rhythm, or any other element covered in the WEAL book or does it more summarize the content?
You may simply write the answers to questions above on the side or back of the printed page.
