Dear Art Families,

We learned about the following art terms. Please have students watch these short videos.

Composition - how objects are included in a picture/painting (no video, just the overall idea)

THINK>>> How do these ideas apply to you when making your own LARGE Audubon style bird portrait?

Students will need to begin to learn these terms. I will be testing on them at the end of the year. It is my hope that as we discuss art and use these terms, they will begin to apply them on their own and remember them.

PART 2: This coop we learned about the feathers on the wings. Students should know which feathers are scapulars, wing coverts, secondaries, and primaries. It would be great if they identify them on multiple wing pictures... this will solidify these types in their minds. It will facilitate their drawing as well!
Also, we learned the basic method for drawing a bird in profile. I have asked the students to practice this at home at least on five different birds. They do not do full drawings, but more like sketch outlines as they brought home from class.

Method Summary in case they forget-- Top of head arc, neck/chest line, find and add the shoulder, draw the wing, add the tail, bring the belly in at the appropriate place, add the "magic line" for the beak and eye in the direction it should go, then draw beak all the way into face, draw eye, draw branch or something to stand on, add legs from lower thigh down, and finally the feet.

They may choose any birds in profile to draw. Here are some options:
