Tomorrow our students will be painting their salt dough maps of South America. Last co-op they spent time shaping the continent, outlining countries, and naming them. I also gave them a blank outlined map of South America to fill in with each country. The students came up with several fun mnemonic devices to remember where each country goes. Here are the ones we learned:

1. To remember the countries from the top right going left toward Ecuador: French Surfs Get Very Cold Easily OR French Surfs Get
Venezuelian Coffee (in) Ecuador.
*Some students came up with their own mnemonic device, so you may want to ask them what they came up with.
2. They remembered Uruguay and Paraguay by going UP. To go up, you start at the bottom with the U in Uruguay and you go UP to
Paraguay (Paraguay is like a Parachute).
3. Brazil is BIG, so it starts with a "B."
4. For the last four countries, we used a funny story. "Arg" and Tina" (Argentina" ate a big bowl (Bolivia) of Chili (chile) in Peru. We used
our fingers to tell the funny story and point to each country as we said the story. We also remember Peru because you can draw the
letter "P" inside of Peru's outline.

Your kids should be close to drawing South America from memory (especially after this week). Tomorrow, we will move on to learn about these states in the Trail of Tears: Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. We will drill location and capitals through a fun game including the other previous states we've been learning. We'll also look at the Mexican Territory.

Here's the link to the states/capitals song that we listened to in class last co-op. I have a paper copy of the lyrics to this song that I can email you if you'd like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSvJ9SN8THE.

I'm having a great time with your enthusiastic students!
