Families - Fantastic job last time on your Van Gogh Starry Night inspired yarn paintings! So beautiful. I hope you will be inspired to translate other paintings into yarn art as well.

Current plan for this coming coop is to make a "fake" Japanese maki-e lacquer box. After watching the maki-e process, you will see why these are "fake" :D! However, I have done a similar project the last time we did year 3, and it was quite a favorite. Good art concepts to learn regardless!

Please have students bring:
pencil
eraser
POINTED sharp scissors - better if they are small! Bring two pairs if you are unsure :D!
TWEEZERS...
I am happy to take these from moms in the am and return them to mom's room later. FYI They will be for picking up paper and placing it - they should not be ruined in this project!

Please print these pictures (you don't have to print the other details) and bring to class - even black and white is fine. Have students consider which designs they like from these samples... Our boxes are small 3" squares. They can think about what they want a design to look like on them.

AT HOME:
Please watch the first video (about 4 min) and at least one of the other videos on maki-e... it is fine to skip around on some of the longer videos. The point is to see the amazing amount of patience and detail put into these pieces.

OTHER/EXTRA ITEMS:

Another area we will not touch on in art that is fascinating in Japan is Yosegi -- looks like inlaid wood -- so very beautiful.
Yosegi — Wood working - VERY COOL video on a craftsman trying to save the craft - modernize designs but not compromise the tradition

Looking forward to making these together!
