Dear UG Moms,

Over the next few co-ops our students will be writing a four to five paragraph Biography paper. Students will need to pick one person of choice from the 1900's. Older students are challenged to write five paragraphs while younger students may write three to four paragraphs. For the next week and a half, students should begin reading, researching, and note taking. If they complete all of the note taking, go ahead and begin writing the rough draft of the paper.

This assignment requires your child to find a source book in which to find information for his/her paper. I would stick to one or two books. From these books, students will look for information that they would like to include in their paper. In class we discussed this process and how to take notes using graphic organizers and colored index cards that I handed out. Pages 5-7 of the Writing Aids guide include helpful information for writing a biography paper.

This task will require more from your student than in previous assignments. The goal is two part: 1) to learn how to research and pull information from a source 2) to learn how to organize and condense thoughts in an interesting manner that flows cohesively.

I have supplied a handful of graphic organizers in the writing notebook (co-op 12 and 13 material). I also have an example Biography paper from a level 5 TOG student for your child to read and use as a model. The final copy of this paper will be due on co-op 13, so students have plenty of time to complete this paper. I have attached a biography outline handout that will serve as a guide for creating each paragraph.

All pre-writing, graphic organizers, and note taking will be due at next co-op. I will collect any rough draft form of this paper and make edits, but it is perfectly okay if the rough draft has not been started yet. Remember, we have until March 14th to finish the final draft for this assignment.

Any questions, please ask.
