Upper Grammar Writing

Good morning!
Originally I had the final draft of the stories due this week, but since so many have already finished those, I am offering a couple of alternatives.
We have talked about poetry in class some. I have not given specific instruction on it, but they all seem to have quite a bit of exposure and experience with it. Some were eager to give writing one a try. We talked about the current in-class poem we are working on. They rhyming scheme for it is AACBBC. They could write a poem like that. We also talked about HAIKU as a fun option.
The other alternative is to write a letter. This is the month of elections and Veterans' Day and Thanksgiving. It is easy to complain. It is better to thank. They could write to an elected official (Governor Bevin, their representative, Tim Moore who has not only served the state but also our homeschool community, ....) or a veteran - maybe someone your family has connections to, someone in your church - preferably not someone too close to them that they should thank all the time, but looking a little further out.
Next co-op we will begin work on a short unit on Kentucky history. As I looked over the curriculum for the rest of the year and outlined the options, this seemed like the best thing to do now.
I will provide everything they need in class, though they would benefit from additional reading and some field trips . Those just don't have to be now. My goal is to help them practice writing and at the same time give them a framework to hang things and ignite a curiosity about their state.
Thank you for the opportunity to work with you children. They are fantastic. I look forward to our time together.
