Dialectic History Assignments

I'm looking forward to the year ahead with your Dialectic student(s)!
Attached is the first history assignment - due August 20th at Co-op 1. Students may type their answers into the document and bring a printed copy to class or they can print the assignment and use neat handwriting. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.
Hopefully between now and then your student can set up a binder with their timeline and key figure/event/document cards. I would recommend they not cut all the key cards out yet as who/what they are is noted in the footer - students can simply cut them out as they are used. Your students will be receiving a binder pocket at the first co-op in which they can store their completed key cards. If they would like to use dividers, they could label as follows: Questions/Notes, Timeline, Key Cards, Maps. That might leave an extra divider which could be used for another class. I will not be collecting their notebooks so the level of organization required is up to each family, but it is a great opportunity for students to begin taking responsibility for keeping their work organized. They will need to bring their timelines to co-op.

Co-op 2 Assignment

Hi all,
Whew, we did it! Co-op 1 is in the books. I think it was a bit of a whirlwind for us mamas, but I hope the kids had a good first day. I was so pleased with our Dialectic History group - what a neat bunch of kids! Please feel free to ask your kids how it went for them and pass on any feedback you feel might be helpful. I think I may have expected them to be able to write/copy a bit faster than they were able, so I'll try to make adjustments for that in the future. A few students had trouble locating their key figure cards/timeline pages. If you do not have those, please let me know. Moving forward, it would be helpful for them to have their history binder with timeline, etc. with them in class. If they have a basic set of colored pencils they could bring, that would be helpful as well. If you student didn't get the shading of their map finished, please ask them to do so before next co-op.
Please see attached assignment due at co-op 2 and let me know if you have any questions.
Blessings-

As we anticipate co-op 2, I wanted to ask your student to be prepared on two items.
1 - Upon arrival at co-op, please have your student place in the homework box the following 3 things: completed homework questions, Charlemagne key figure card, map from last co-op (Fall of Roman Empire/Rise of Islamic Empire). I will walk around to get a visual check on their timeline work during class - no need to pull those pages from their binder. I will be adding a few lines to their map during my free period so that we can include a bit more info on the map in class as we discuss Charlemagne.
2 - Please have your student bring a small set of colored pencils if possible - if your student could get in the habit of having these in his/her bag, that would be great as they will be used regularly for map work.
Co-op 3 Assignment

What a fun afternoon we had in Dialectic History - your kids knew so much about Charles Martel, Pepin, Charlemagne, the Popes, and the Vikings!
As a note, I do look over your student(s)' work and often make a few comments. I hand those back in class so they can be utilized in class discussion, but feel free to ask to see their question page if you'd like to see/review my comments on any given week.
Attached below is the assignment for Co-op 3. I told the students I would post a picture of my Charlemagne key figure card but I'll need to add that later. I also hope to post some chapter connections to the page numbers listed in the curriculum for The Story of Europe in case you're using a digital edition that doesn't have page numbers.
*I have added a picture of my own completed Charlemagne key card in case it might be helpful for your student. Theirs does not need to match mine but it may help them see what I included or how I formatted it (more note-like) for ease of reference.
*In case you are using a digital edition of The Story of Europe, here are some page number conversions:
Week 6 - assignment includes p. 132-146 which is begins with the Otto I section in Ch. 19, covers all of ch. 20 and stops at Philip Augustus in ch. 21
Week 7 - assignment includes p. 147-151 which begins with Philip Augustus in ch. 21 and goes through the end of the chapter.
Please note that this is not the entire reading assignment - other chapters are covered - this only converts what is listed only by page number. Reach out to me if this is not clear.

Attached is the assignment for Co-op 4. Please feel free to reach out if you/your student has any questions. As we’re several co-ops in, I’d welcome any feedback on how Dialectic History is going for your student or how you all feel about the workload. Please always feel free to modify assignments as needed – just keep me in the loop. Happy learning!

Co-op 5 Assignment

Please see attached for Co-op 5 Assignment.
Note as we enter Unit 2, our history class will likely follow the explorers thread, the Spanish conquest of Central and South America thread, and the Reformation thread as I believe the Dialectic students will be covering artists, etc. in their Art/Literature class. I will confirm with Brandy but just wanted to give you a peek into my plan. It is not that we will ignore the Renaissance all together, just we won't go into great detail on artists, technique, etc.
*Edit - would you please ask your student to add the following dates to their timeline. I had hoped to do this in class but we simply ran out of time...
1347-1352 Black Plague ravages Europe
1429 Joan of Arc rescues Orleans
1453 Constantinople falls to the Turks
