Rhetoric History Co-op 5

Post by EricaS »

This might have a few more questions than sometimes, but most of them are pretty short answer. There are not a lot of regular readings for this time.

I am working on an honors/bonus assignment. The basis of this is the readings from the Modern Revivalism book that are listed on this, but there is no need to purchase or read that book.

I will include anything needed with the few questions - including pages in the teacher notes to add additional information. If you had planned on Charles Finney's biography or any of the other readings on him, make sure and take some notes to add anything you would like to the conversation.

It is fascinating to see where so many things we think of as normal in church today started. I don't want to necessarily condemn or praise, I just want us to look as honestly as possible at the evidence and arguments and THINK about why we do what we do. I am especially concerned that we avoid strawmen in our disagreements within the Church. We will be talking about some of these things in class. We will cover enough in class to enable participation for those who don't do the questions, but it will be more fun the more you know ahead of time :) I hope to have that completed by Friday. If you are planning, it shouldn't take more than an hour or two - maybe less.

We are not going to go into great detail on any of this, but what was happening in the church was significant - and the church played a fascinating and confusing role in the war between the states. We are laying the foundation for understanding that better.
