Rhetoric Literature - Short Stories American Regionalism

I will be bringing the packets of short stories to the parent gathering on Tuesday.
Parents: If this is your student's first year in Rhetoric, please go over assignment with them and make sure they know where to find all the resources they need. The Poetics Book can be a bit confusing at first - lots of sections.
Parents: Rhetoric literature is a big jump for most students as they come from Dialectic. Literature studies take a big turn toward analysis. They have been used to reading mostly childhood classics that are sweet in plot line and not difficult to read. Your student will be jumping into 20th century literature that is fairly easy to read because it is close to our current language patterns. However, the subject matter and themes will correlate much more with the darkness of the historical narrative of the 20th century. Naturalism and Modernism (philosophies that show up in literature) do not line up with a Christian worldview. We discuss these worldviews in class with an aim toward helping them become critical thinkers and discerning consumers of stories.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions. There is lots of grace as the students move toward literary analysis.
As a fun addition to Rhetoric literature, I'll be including some musical guides through the century. Check them out on Spotify as background to your studies each week.
Composers: Claud Debussy and Gustav Mahler - both very popular at the turn of the century.
