Writing Loose Ends

Post by PhyllisG »

Ladies,

I've really enjoyed having your students in my class this year. It's so fun to see the different personalities, and I've enjoyed getting to know the younger "new" students. Everyone has been doing well in class and with their writing assignments. There are a couple of students who did not receive a copy of the example formal letter that I wrote to Chick-fil-a, so I've attached it below. Due to time constraints this co-op, I was not able to grade everyone's writing during TOG. I have brought them home with me to grade and will have them at co-op 4. Additionally, there are a few adjustments that need to be made with the students' grammar entries in their composition notebooks. I was not clear and did not give an example for the students to follow, so there is a lot of variety in what I am seeing.

The grammar entries should:
1. Be written in complete sentences--no bullets.
2. Have one summary of 1-3 sentences for each week between co-ops, or for each week they do grammar. Some are doing latin/latin roots instead of actual English grammar, which is fine, but adding examples about what was studied would be appropriate. Many of the entries have been too general and too brief.
3. Be neatly written. Handwriting has been okay for most, almost illegible for some. So please review your student's work and check that both the vocabulary and grammar portions are neat and readable.

Example:
During the week of September 17th, I studied the difference between subjects and predicates and how to diagram them correctly. I also learned about simple subjects and compound subjects and the proper way to write compound sentences with a comma and a conjunction. I took a quiz and received 92 percent.

This post should help to clear up any confusion about the grammar entries and that next co-op everyone will have notebooks that are much more in-line with what I'm hoping to see. If not, please feel free to contact me with your question.

Blessings and prayers for a relaxing Fall Break!!
Phyllis
