Co-p 3 writing activity

Post by JodyI »

I am pleased with the great writing potential students have shown in class so far. Some of you really knocked your sense words out of the water! (To use a cliche ;) .) Keep up the good work. If your individual feedback is unclear, please feel free to e-mail me.

In class, I forgot to hand out a verb exercise sheet that is due next co-op. I am attaching the below as an alternative, which I think will actually be more helpful.

Students, please complete the steps at the end of the message for next co-op in place of the verb exercise. Should take maybe 15-20 minutes or so.

The attached "Gift of the Nile essay" from a previous TOG year is a helpful review of last co-op and a good picture of sense words and strong verbs as we move to next coop. This would be a great exercise for first-year students (or even second track) to do with parents.

Though this essay was from an older Rhetoric student and is a bit longer than I required for students this last coop, it's a good example of the level of thoroughness I'm looking for, even in a one-paragraph assignment.

First-year R students, this example is more extensive than I expected for our co-op 2 Gift of the Nile writing, so don't feel like I had wanted something this long. It will accurately give an idea of where we'd like to head for using strong verbs and sense words even in more stereotypically factual writing.

Please complete the following for next co-op:

1) Print the two-paragraph "Gift of the Nile." Read through once.

2) On a second read-though, underline all the verbs and "action words" (verbals, etc. Don't worry about technicalities)

3) Circle all the sense words

4) Put a box or little picture frame in the margin when the words paint an "image" in your mind

5) Bring to class
