Dialectic Geography

Post by PhyllisG »

There will be no homework for the first co-op. Each student needs to bring a pencil, paper, and 3-ring binder with dividers for the maps and pages I'll be handing out in class. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks!!

Here's the homework assignment to be completed by co-op 2:

All students: Watch the following videos (Note: I have previewed these videos and find them acceptable for my family to view, however, each family is different and so I highly encourage all parents to preview the videos before showing them to their students. If there is anything that might be questionable, I'll do my best to highlight it for consideration.) These videos are fairly short and won't take much time. Older students, take notes as you watch and turn your notes in as homework at co-op 2.

~ https://youtu.be/Eizhmb_tNSk (The United Kingdom and the complexities of the nation's names and territories)

~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWZiO7YNoPQ (A lighthearted video on Ireland, its history, geography, flora and fauna and culture. There is
"playful" violence and references to drinking occasionally throughout the video, but the strongest cultural reference to alcohol use is 6:30-6:53.)

New students:
Complete the first page of the globe packet titled "Parts of the Globe" as well as the worksheet titled "Hemispheres". Please do not do the other pages of the packet, but bring the entire packet back with you to co-op 2. The entire packet will be turned in at co-op 3, after it's completed, so be sure to put your name on it and keep track of it in your folder.

Let me know if you or your students have any questions!

Older students:
Please take notes on the Geography NOW Iceland video, complete the 3 worksheets (2 pages) practicing finding locations using latitude and longitude. Turn in notes and worksheets in the homework box at co-op 3.

New students:
Complete the rest of your globe packet by completing the worksheets on latitude and longitude. Students will turn in the entire packet at co-op 3, so be sure to put your name on it and keep track of it in your folder. *Optional: Choose one of the shorter recommended videos to take notes on and turn them in with worksheets.

Homework for Co-op 5:

All students:

1. Fill out the map from class with names of continents, oceans, and the names of the seas we've already labeled on the map of Europe (hint: we have labeled 5 seas so far). Older students should be able to do most of this from memory, but all students can use an atlas if they need help. Your student may color the continents and oceans different colors for retention and a better idea of where the oceans are located.

2. Watch the following videos (older students please take notes)

--Geography NOW Lichtenstein (12 min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTiLTnW ... W&index=27

3. Go to https://www.dkfindout.com/us/earth/oceans-and-seas/ or https://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com ... -kids.html and take notes on the 5 different oceans and what makes them unique.

4. Nat Geo overview of oceans (7 min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GRA7ilM708
*Note: This video does have a reference to evolution and the last part of it speaks to some of the current problems with maintaining healthy oceans—could be a great topic of conversation to have with your student on stewardship of God’s creation and what that might look like for Christians vs. the modern day’s views. Please preview before allowing your student to watch to avoid any concerns on subject matter.

5. Use following link to finish any notes you weren't able to write down during class:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eEwA8f ... sp=sharing

Optional but recommended:

--Cute video/song on the world’s oceans (3 min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfv7TF9RHbY (If taking notes on #3 above is too time-intensive for your student, then this video is a good alternative)

--Any video on Germany, Austria or Switzerland
Germany: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuClZjO ... W&index=19
Austria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKsGmyh ... HW&index=3
Switzerland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShWBUWyD3AA

--TED-ed: A history of cheese (6 min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKae1k1BDdA

(Note: I generally preview the videos and find them acceptable for students to view, however, each family is different, so I highly encourage all parents to preview the videos before showing them to their students.)

Have a wonderful fall break everyone!!!
