Co-op 9 Assignment

Post by EllenG »

Please see attached assignment for Co-op 9. Note - I will also be creating a separate post with information on a collaborative project that will cover Co-ops 10-11. I wanted to go ahead and post it in case any families want to begin looking for resources.

Co-op 10 Assignment and Class Recap

Post by EllenG »

Hi parents,
What a joy it was to all be back together at Northside today. In D History we discussed the Catholic Reformation, the Huguenots, and Elizabeth I. I also introduced your students to a method of notetaking called Cornell Notes. It could be a very helpful tool to your students in a variety of classes/settings if they choose to put it into practice. We did practice it together today during our discussion. Perhaps you can ask your student to share a little of what they learned about Cornell Notes or the topics we took notes on.

Below is the link to the video introducing Cornell Notes that we viewed in class.

Here is another video I mentioned to the students. It combines some sketching with the Cornell method. We did not have time to watch it but it might be helpful to students who enjoy drawing or who are visual learners.

Also, I'm attaching the template for the Cornell Notes that I handed out in class. You can easily make this work by adding the "I" to regular notebook paper.

And now, for next co-op....
If you have not read the Colonies Project post, please view it first, as it will give context for the attached assignment. Please be sure to go over this assignment with your student. It will ultimately be used in their presentation and included in our class book. If you or your student has ANY questions on the colonies project in general or the specific assignments, please ask!

Co-op 11 Assignment/Plan

Post by EllenG »

At Co-op 11, the writing and history classes will meet together during first and third periods for presentations. During that time, students will be making a brief presentation of the factual information regarding their assigned colony and then reading aloud their historical fiction piece. I will have their map on the tv screen as a visual aid during their presentation. There is no additional written assignment due for history. I'm hoping this will give them extra time to dedicate to their writing and presentation preparation.
A few notes (most of which I've discussed with the students)....

They do not need to prepare any other visual aids - no posters, boards, etc. Their map will serve as their visual aid.

The factual information should be "presented" not read. Their factual paragraph from writing class will serve as a guide for this. They do not need to include every detail they learned about their colony, but they will want to provide an overview to help their classmates learn about that colony and to give us enough information to better understand the setting of their historical fiction piece. They are welcome to have a notecard or piece of paper to refer to.

Their historical fiction piece can simply be read aloud. Practicing will likely make them more comfortable and fluid.

The maximum time your student will have will be about 10 minutes, so please time your student's entire presentation prior to their coming to make sure they aren't much longer. Depending on the length of your student's historical fiction piece, they may need to read only a selection from it.

If you or your student has ANY questions or needs clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Co-op 13 Assignment

Post by EllenG »

What a joy it was to hear from your kids yesterday. They wowed me with their creativity and presentation skills. Each should have received a half sheet with some notes and encouragements with their returned map and homework. Attached is the assignment for next co-op. With us missing the last co-op, I dropped the ball on having the students complete the key card for Jonathan Edwards so we'll just skip it at this point.

Re: Dialectic History Assignments

Post by EllenG »

Friends,
A few things...
I goofed on the Co-op 15 Assignment and left some timeline dates from a previous assignment at the bottom (2nd page as I print). Oops! Those timeline dates should have already been added to your student's timeline.

Also, several students expressed interest in designing a cover for our class book. Originally there were just a few so I suggested a collaboration, but as more expressed interest, I've determined that probably won't be best. So, I'm inviting any interested students to design and submit a cover to me at our next co-op (4/22). It would need to be in portrait orientation and fit well within the dimensions of a regular page (let's say 8 x 10.5). It would need to include the following title: Stories from the Thirteen Colonies. If you/they choose to do so, I'd be open to them working with one other student on a design. Please reach out if you have further questions.

Blessings-
Ellen
