Rhetoric Literature: Pride and Prejudice #2 - Co-op 16

Post by LeeAnnP »

You made it!! This was a tough year for literature and you have now surveyed 1300 years of stories, songs, plays, and poems.

This week, there is no written assignment - yippee!

Finish reading Pride and Prejudice. As you read, continue to think about the way Jane Austen develops her characters. Which ones change? Which ones stay the same? Think about comparisons/contrasts of characters:
Elizabeth & Jane, Elizabeth and Lydia, Elizabeth and Charlotte.
Darcy and Bingley, Darcy and Wickham, Darcy and Mr. Collins.

Or think more deeply about some of the minor characters. How did Austen develop these and do they seem like people you know?
Mr. & Mrs. Bennett
The Bingley extended family
The Gardeners
Lady Catherine
Georgianna Darcy

Also think about the words Pride and Prejudice. How do they continue to show up throughout the novel?

Consider the actions of Lydia. How do her actions and character reflect on the whole Bennett family. What could be the consequences for all of their futures?

Continue to think about Jane Austen's use of satire, humor, irony.

So much of their communication happens through letters. Compare that to today? How do we communicate? At what depth? What have we gained or lost?

Finally, think about how this novel speaks to the character traits of a true friend, a future spouse, yourself. We will touch on all of this next week.

We will have tea and treats next week. I'll supply the tea. You supply the treats. (typically, tea treats are bitesize)
