Rhetoric Writing, Co-op 13

Post by JodyI »

For co-op 13, please do the following:

1) Complete the final draft of your Huck Finn essay.

2) Complete the following:

Both Huckleberry Finn and Heart of Darkness deal with journeys down a river.

Consider Twain’s descriptions of the river as shown through the eyes of Huck in Huckleberry Finn. Compare them with descriptions found in Heart of Darkness. What sort of things are observed? What sort of descriptions are used (sense words, similes, actions, etc. etc.)? What impressions are created? Jot down 4-5 specific comparisons. Does not need to be lengthy or polished. Then complete the following:

1) Pick a place with which you are familiar (a river or creek would be great but use what works for your schedule).
2) Observe it closely.
3) Write three descriptions of it (one paragraph each is sufficient):

A. Write a description as an author/character from the Romantic era.

B. Describe the same scene/place as if you were a Realist.

C. Write the description as an author or character part of the Impressionist movement.

Bring your notes and three descriptions to class. We'll be sharing them in class, so don't read each other's descriptions beforehand.
