Lit & Geo for Co-Op 14

Post by CrystalC »

Dear Dialect Parents:

Please find the assignment for Co-op 14 attached.

The next book we are tackling is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of Baskervilles. If your student enjoys audio books, this Sherlock Holmes mystery is available as an audio book for $.99 on amazon.

In class today we discussed worldview and how that contributes to an author's story. I shared a bit about Doyle's worldview with the students (raised Catholic, became agnostic, and later turned to spiritualism after his wife died). We talked about what makes a good mystery, the definition of a "moor" and other things that contribute to the mood of this story.

I listened to the audio book, and definitely felt the "creepy factor" of this story. I'm not sure how much of that is from the way the story was portrayed by the narrator, or from the actual text.

This week the students will be on the lookout for clues in the book that point to Doyle's worldview, as well as suggestions of the supernatural in the story. You'll see from the assignment that I'm also asking them to make some bullet points after each chapter assigning the significant events of the chapter to Exposition, Rising Action, Climax or Resolution.

Please ensure that your student sees the assignment sheet each week even if you transfer the assignment to a school planner. A few students were caught off guard today in class because they hadn't seen (or read) the assignment sheet.

With joy,

Crystal
