Moms,
Last Thursday our students were given a grammar pop quiz. I've asked them to work on memorizing the Sentence Classification chart so that when we discuss clauses, phrases, parts of speech, and sentence purposes, they all know what we are talking about in class. I'm giving them tickets for memorizing terms and writing this chart from memory.
Mr. Jason Boren loved reading his letters that our students wrote to him. He is in the process of corresponding to each student.
Our persuasive letter presenters last week did a terrific job! Way to go Elisabeth, Lily Kate, Karin, and Karsten. Next week our presenters will be: Sophie, Camille, Isaac, and Kinsley. They will have two minutes each to present their story papers.
Co-op 7 Assignment: Students are to write a story of a recent event that has happened in their life. Last week we discussed parts of a story to include: characters, setting, plot, conflict, theme. I read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, and we worked through the various parts of the story. Included in co-op 7 writing notebook, you will find a variety of graphic organizers in which your child can choose. There are also key word outlines for students to use if they prefer this method of organizing. There is an example personal narrative from the Writing Aids notebook that we read together as a class, highlighting elements of a good story.
**I would like students to turn in their graphic organizer(s) with this assignment. Please scale this as needed. 5th/6th grade students are capable of writing 3-5 paragraphs. 3rd/4th grade students area capable of 1-3 paragraphs. Remember to use any oral narration techniques for students who aren't yet typing or handwriting proficiently. The idea is to get YOUR child's thoughts on paper. This isn't a typing or handwriting class, so do not stress about that!
If your child is completing the grammar worksheets and you want me to check them, please remind them to turn their notebook in to me with their writing assignment. I'm giving each student a ticket for completing grammar work at home during the week. It doesn't have to be the TOG grammar sheets as long as they are working on grammar weekly. There were some tricky sentences in last week's worksheet. Please ask if you have any questions!
Thank you for sharing your children with me! I look forward to being with them on Thursday mornings.
