Thank you all for a great first co-op.
There is no official assignment for the next co-op.
At the first co-op, we discussed persuasion. Some good discussions to have at home may include - when should we try to persuade others? what means are available to us to persuade in various situations? what are the three things Aristotle said are elements of persuasion?
We talked about the rhetoric of domination that is very common. In the rhetoric of domination people persuade others to their cause or will by power - smashing ideas that do not line up, using words or pictures or actions to tear down anyone opposed. We juxtaposed this with what God much more often calls us to, the rhetoric of love where unexpected, maybe undeserved, acts and words of love change peoples' hearts.
I encourage you to keep your eyes open for persuasive arguments being made all around you - ads, political speeches, people airing their opinions in social media, etc. You can bring anything you find to class or email it to me ahead of time. Both good and fallacious examples would be fun to evaluate. Are they using the rhetoric of domination or of love? How could it look different if they used the other?
If you are working through a logical fallacies book this year, as you read, add notes to the handout from class - additional fallacies your book may list, more explanatory information on ones there, etc. Bring examples of these any time, as well.
Looking forward to seeing you soon -
Erica/ Mrs. Searl
