In class today we reviewed Point of View and how to tell whether something is written in first person, second person or third person. As you’re reading various different things this week, pause to ask your student the point of view of the story. We also talked about poetry in class. Many kids have a disdain for poetry and it is especially difficult to develop a love for poetry when they’re reading poems they can’t relate to or appreciate. This week, please feel free to pull in other resources in order to spark a love of poetry in your child.
In geography we practiced blobbing. Please ask your student to show you their “blob” of the world. This is a quick method that we’ll be using this year to sketch maps.
We also learned the names and locations of six South American countries. Ask your student to relay the silly method I showed them for memorizing those 6 countries.
We are heavily using dry erase pens in class. Multiple students did not have dry erase pens in class today. Please ensure your student’s Literature & Geography binder is stocked with both pencils and dry erase pens. Ultra fine tip pens are best, but if you can’t find those then fine tip pens are also acceptable.
Literature:
1. Download & print the SAP that goes with the Wordsworth book that you’re using.
Complete the SAPs (one for week 5 and one for week 6) to turn in at the start of Co-op 3. Parents should review these sheets for completion prior to co-op, please.
2. Students are assigned to memorize the next four literary terms that we marked in class (climax, resolution, theme and tone). Students should memorize the exact definition in their glossary in order to participate in our fun games in class.
3. Each student is asked to find a piece of poetry they personally enjoy to photocopy or copy & paste into a document to submit with their work. Students *may* be asked to read the poem they’ve selected in class.
Geography:
Use your dry erase pens to practice labeling the 6 countries we learned in class on the unlabeled map in your binder. Memorize the country names, locations and capitals of these 6 countries (Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile & Bolivia). Copies of the maps are attached to this message.
Blob & label the world (like we did in class). Label the 7 continents, 5 oceans, Equator and Prime Meridian. This exercise should take NO MORE than 10 minutes and should be done independently. I recommend blobbing while looking at a map the first week, then blobbing from memory the second week.
As always, please let me know if you have questions about these assignments.
With joy,
Mrs. C
